Biscayne Bay helicopter crash kills one and injures two

A Robinson R44 II helicopter crashed into Biscayne Bay near Key Biscayne, Florida, on Wednesday morning, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. The aircraft, which was reportedly being used for aerial photography of a speedboat event, went down near Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park around 11:15 a.m. local time.

Authorities have identified the deceased pilot as 63-year-old Tomas Pendas, president of Global Aerials. The two other occupants, 52-year-old Ryan McCoy and 27-year-old Ryan Ferraro, were transported to a local trauma center. Both survivors were reported to be in stable condition and have since been released from the hospital.

Emergency response efforts involved the U.S. Coast Guard, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are leading an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. While recent heavy rains were noted in South Florida, officials have not yet confirmed if weather played a role in the accident.
