Rio de Janeiro helicopter crash kills Colombian influencer and family
A sightseeing helicopter crashed in a forested area of Rio de Janeiro on August 8, killing four people. The victims, all part of a Colombian family on vacation, were identified as 17-year-old social media influencer Sofia Murillo, her mother Wendy Manrique (37), her grandmother Rocío Cubillos (59), and the pilot, Alessandro Rocha.
The Robinson R44 aircraft, operated by Voo Rio Panorâmico, crashed near the Vista Chinesa lookout in Tijuca National Park while performing a tour to view landmarks such as Christ the Redeemer. The impact caused a fire that spread through the dense vegetation, complicating rescue efforts due to the steep and remote terrain.
Authorities, including the Civil Police and the Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center (Cenipa), have launched investigations to determine the cause of the crash. While the tour company stated that the aircraft's maintenance was up to date and the pilot was properly licensed, officials are examining whether there were regulatory or oversight deficiencies in the sector.
