Helicopter accidents in Rio de Janeiro

Overview

A series of fatal helicopter accidents in Rio de Janeiro has prompted investigations into aviation safety.

In mid-June, a collision involving two helicopters resulted in the deaths of influencer Gaspar Prim Díaz, known as Gaspi, along with five others, including director Lucas Vignale and singer Oliver Tree. Preliminary reports indicated that one of the helicopters was not detected by radar during its flight.

In August, a separate sightseeing helicopter crash occurred near Vista Chinesa in Tijuca National Park. A Robinson R44 aircraft, operated by Voo Rio Panorâmico, crashed into a forested hillside and exploded, killing pilot Alessandro Rocha and three members of a Colombian family: 17-year-old Sofia Murillo, her mother Wendy Manrique, and her grandmother Rocío Cubillos. Due to the severity of the crash, the Medical Legal Institute (IML) had to perform dental and anthropological examinations to confirm the identities of the victims.

Following the accident, a Rio de Janeiro court authorized the cremation of the three Colombian women, whose families intend to transport their ashes back to Colombia. In response to the incident, the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) and the Rio de Janeiro municipal government implemented new measures for panoramic flights, which included the suspension of operations for several companies. The Aeronautical Accidents Investigation and Prevention Center (Cenipa) and the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police continue to investigate the cause and potential regulatory or oversight deficiencies.
