Hellenic Fire Service deploys Rafnar speedboats for wildfire response

The Hellenic Fire Service has integrated new Rafnar high-speed boats into its operational fleet to combat wildfires and conduct maritime rescues. These vessels are designed to operate in ports, marinas, and coastal areas, providing critical support when strong winds hinder aerial firefighting or when land access is blocked.

The Rafnar boats serve a dual purpose: firefighting and civilian evacuation. They can approach difficult coastlines to rescue residents or visitors trapped by flames and are capable of extinguishing fires on ships, in harbors, and on coastal land accessible from the sea. Additionally, they transport firefighters, EMAK personnel, and equipment to remote islands and coastal locations.

Technically, each 12-meter boat is constructed from advanced composite materials with a shallow draft of 88 centimeters, allowing access to shallow waters. Powered by three outboard diesel engines totaling 1,050 horsepower, the vessels can reach speeds of approximately 50 knots with a range of 250 nautical miles. Each boat is equipped with a firefighting cannon capable of delivering up to 1,800 liters of water per minute and can carry up to 12 people.
