Hellenic Police and NTUA partner on AI traffic management

The Hellenic Police and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) have launched a collaboration to enhance traffic management in Attica using advanced technologies. The partnership focuses on the ‘Traffic Commander’ system, which will utilize Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital twins, and advanced data analysis to improve road safety and traffic flow.

This initiative aims to integrate the operational experience of the police with scientific research to support decision-making. The system is designed to combine various data sources to provide a comprehensive view of traffic conditions, treating road management as a complex issue involving infrastructure, driver behavior, and emergency response.

In tandem with these technological advancements, Greek authorities are adjusting operational strategies for roadside sobriety checks. Due to changing patterns in alcohol consumption, police are expanding ‘alcotes’ to include daytime hours, such as Sunday afternoons in crowded areas, to catch drivers attempting to evade traditional nighttime checkpoints. Statistics show that 1.5 million sobriety tests were conducted in the first half of 2026, with a 0.87% positive rate and a 22% decrease in fatal accidents.
