Hellenic Police issue thousands of fines in nationwide helmet safety campaign

The Hellenic Police are conducting an intensive nationwide campaign titled ‘Zero Tolerance for Non-Use of Helmets’ to ensure compliance among motorcycle riders, passengers, and users of light personal electric vehicles (LPEVs).

During the week of August 24 to August 30, 2026, authorities conducted 22,971 inspections across Greece. These checks resulted in 2,656 violations by drivers and 302 violations by passengers. Specific infractions included 1,662 motorcycle driver violations, 899 LPEV violations, and 93 ATV violations.

Regional data shows significant enforcement activity: Attica recorded 1,052 violations, South Aegean 607, Ionian Islands 338, Crete 233, Western Greece 219, Thessaloniki 150, and Thessaly 90. In the Ionian Islands specifically, Corfu, Zakynthos, Lefkada, and Kefalonia reported various levels of non-compliance.

Under the new Road Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025), penalties have been strengthened. Motorcycle drivers failing to wear a helmet or ensure a passenger's safety face a €350 fine and a 30-day license suspension. Passengers also face a €350 fine, while LPEV drivers are subject to a €30 fine. Police emphasize that the campaign's primary goal is to promote life-saving safety habits rather than mere revenue collection.
