HELLENiQ ENERGY launches first large-scale battery storage project in Thessaloniki

HELLENiQ Renewables, a member of HELLENiQ ENERGY, has completed the construction of its first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at its industrial facilities in Thessaloniki, Greece. The project represents an investment of approximately 50 million euros, with 40% of the funding provided by Recovery Fund resources.

The facility features three storage stations with a total installed capacity of 100 MW and an energy capacity of 200 MWh. This makes it one of the largest energy storage projects in Greece and Southeast Europe. The system is designed to provide flexibility and balance to the National Electricity Transmission System, helping to mitigate energy loss from renewable sources by storing excess power for later use.

The daily energy storage capacity is equivalent to the full charge of approximately 3,000 electric vehicles. Infrastructure improvements for the project included a new 33/150 kV step-up substation and a 5-kilometer high-voltage underground transmission line. The company plans to expand further, with a battery station in Meliti, Florina, expected to be operational by the end of the year.
