Helleniq Energy receives approval for 242 MW solar project in Kilkis
The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy has approved the environmental terms for a large-scale renewable energy project by Helleniq Energy in the Kilkis region. The project, developed by Green Power Kilkis, consists of a 242.04 MW photovoltaic plant spread across approximately 2,848 acres in the municipalities of Kilkis, Chalkidona, Oraio-kastros, and Delta.
The plan includes a 90 MW battery energy storage system with a useful capacity of 360 MWh, utilizing lithium-ion accumulators. To connect the facility to the group’s industrial installations in Thessaloniki, a 15.5-kilometer underground 150 kV line will be constructed. This direct connection is estimated to provide the industrial sites with over 70% energy autonomy.
The final design was revised from an original proposal of 285.55 MW to accommodate environmental regulations; seven sub-projects were removed because they were located within 500 meters of the Mikrokampos settlement. The project will utilize approximately 390,370 Jinko solar panels and 830 Sungrow inverters. Additionally, the approval notes the future potential for a 70 MW green hydrogen unit to supply the refinery, though this unit is not part of the current environmental approval.
