Helvetia reports 36% rise in child liability claims during Austrian summer holidays
Helvetia Austria’s analysis of claims from 2016 to 2025 shows that liability incidents involving children increase by roughly 36 % in the June‑August period compared with the December‑February winter months. The insurer attributes the seasonal surge to children spending more time outdoors, engaging in activities such as cycling, e‑scooter riding and playground play, and often being cared for in varied settings like relatives’ homes or external day‑care.
Typical summer damages include broken windows, dented cars, and damage to valuable objects caused by accidental collisions. Helvetia warns that not all policies automatically cover incidents that occur within the extended family or under informal supervision; exclusions can apply depending on the contract. MMag. Andreas Gruber, Helvetia’s head of claims, advises families to review coverage limits, exclusions and the inclusion of children before the holiday season begins.
