Hemus motorway crash kills three, child among dead

A severe traffic collision occurred on Bulgaria’s Hemus motorway near Shumen, where a Volkswagen passenger car struck a cargo van head‑on. The accident killed three people, including an 11‑year‑old child, and left several others injured, among them a 7‑year‑old child in serious condition. Emergency crews from police, fire and medical services responded, transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.

The crash happened in a section of the highway under temporary traffic re‑organisation due to ongoing road works, prompting authorities to divert traffic onto the older I‑2 route. Investigators are examining possible causes such as driver illness, excessive speed or improper maneuvering, and have urged motorists to exercise heightened caution in the area.
