Hendrik Holt arrested in Dubai after prison escape

Hendrik Holt, a convicted fraudster, was arrested in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, following a four-week escape from a prison in Berlin. Holt had failed to return to his facility in late August after a permitted leave.

In 2022, the Osnabrück District Court sentenced Holt to nearly nine years in prison. His criminal history includes defrauding international energy companies by selling non-existent wind farm projects. He also reportedly bribed foreign diplomats to obtain diplomatic passports, which he used to attempt to gain immunity from German law enforcement.

Social psychologist Julia Becker from the University of Osnabrück notes that Holt’s public fascination stems from a combination of his crimes and his persona, characterized by a penchant for luxury, political and business connections, and intense self-promotion.
