Holt, 36, had been at large since August 25, 2026, after failing to return from a sanctioned leave of absence from an open prison facility in Berlin. During his flight, Holt attempted to mislead investigators by posting on Instagram that he was in Moscow, Russia; however, the Osnabrück Public Prosecutor's Office clarified that the claim of being in Russia was a “ruse.” Reports suggest his actual travel route may have taken him through Poland and Turkey before he reached the United Arab Emirates.

Holt was serving a nearly nine-year sentence following a 2022 conviction by the Osnabrück District Court for organized fraud, bribery, and forgery involving non-existent wind farm projects. New details indicate his criminal activities included bribing foreign diplomats to obtain a diplomatic passport, which he used in an attempt to gain immunity from German law enforcement.

Social psychologist Julia Becker from the University of Osnabrück noted that Holt’s public fascination stems from his personality, including an affinity for luxury, high-level self-promotion, and political connections. Holt had even filmed a documentary about himself through ARD while in prison. Authorities are currently preparing extradition documents to return Holt to Germany to serve the remainder of his sentence.
