Hendrik Holt remains at large following prison escape

Hendrik Holt, a convicted wind power fraudster, remains at large after failing to return to a Berlin correctional facility following a sanctioned leave at the end of August. Holt is currently the subject of a worldwide search involving a European Arrest Warrant.

Nils Leimbrock, the senior public prosecutor from Osnabrück leading the investigation, stated that the escape was not a personal surprise given the nature of the case. Leimbrock described Holt as an intelligent individual who may have a “need for attention” that could eventually lead to his capture. The prosecutor noted that Holt sent an email to authorities regarding his disappearance shortly after fleeing.

In 2022, the Osnabrück District Court sentenced Holt to nearly nine years in prison for organized fraud, bribery, and forgery. His crimes involved the sale of non-existent wind farms to foreign energy companies and the bribery of foreign diplomats. While the Osnabrück prosecutor's office indicated they have obtained new “findings” regarding his whereabouts, specific details have not been released.
