Henrique Capriles accuses Delcy Rodríguez of delaying Venezuelan elections
Opposition deputy Henrique Capriles has accused acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez of attempting to extend her interim government until 2030. Capriles claims the administration is seeking any possible means to avoid calling early presidential elections following the capture of Nicolás Maduro by the United States in January.
Capriles noted that the year 2030 marks the end of the term for Maduro, who was declared re-elected in July 2024 despite widespread allegations of fraud involving the National Electoral Council (CNE). He argued that the Constitution is clear in requiring elections in the event of a presidential absence.
Furthermore, Capriles expressed concern regarding the slow progress in appointing new magistrates to the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ). This process is part of a transition agreement between the government and the opposition facilitated by United States-led dialogue, but Capriles warned that the delays suggest the court may not be ready until December.
