Venezuelan political transition and legitimacy disputes
Overview
Political tensions in Venezuela have intensified regarding the legitimacy of the interim government led by Delcy Rodríguez. Following the capture of Nicolás Maduro by the United States in January, US Senator Rick Scott challenged Rodríguez’s authority, labeling her a ‘cartel leader’ and calling for a democratic transition that includes the release of political prisoners and the safe return of opposition figure María Corina Machado.
Opposition deputy Henrique Capriles has since accused Rodríguez of attempting to extend her interim administration until 2030 to avoid calling early presidential elections. Capriles noted that while a US-led dialogue facilitates a transition agreement, delays in appointing new magistrates to the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) suggest the court may not be prepared to oversee the process until December.
