Hepatitis Delta treatment landscape shifts at International Delta Cure Meeting

The fifth International Delta Cure Meeting in Milan highlighted a significant shift in the management of Chronic Hepatitis Delta (HDV). For decades, the disease lacked approved therapies, but experts noted that the landscape is accelerating due to new medical advancements.

Professor Pietro Lampertico and Heiner Wedemeyer presided over the meeting, noting that while HDV is a rare form of hepatitis, it is the most aggressive chronic viral hepatitis. It can rapidly progress in young patients toward cirrhosis, liver failure, hepatocellular carcinoma, and the need for transplants.

Bulevirtide has emerged as the first specific treatment available in clinical practice. Clinical experience with the drug has shown virological and biochemical responses that consolidate over time, maintaining a strong safety profile even in patients with advanced liver disease. Additionally, several new therapeutic strategies are currently in advanced stages of development.
