Hepatitis Delta virus treatment developments

Overview

Recent developments in the management of chronic hepatitis delta virus (HDV) highlight a transition from a lack of approved therapies to an accelerating landscape of medical advancements.

Clinical research has shown progress with investigational treatments, such as the monoclonal antibody brelovitug. In the Phase 3 AZURE-1 trial, patients receiving brelovitug achieved combined virologic response and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) normalization at rates of 56% and 45% depending on dosage, compared to 0% in the delayed treatment group. This therapy aims to control the virus and liver inflammation to prevent progression to cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver cancer.

At the fifth International Delta Cure Meeting in Milan, experts noted that while HDV remains the most aggressive form of chronic viral hepatitis, the availability of treatments is increasing. Bulevirtide has emerged as the first specific treatment available in clinical practice, demonstrating virological and biochemical responses with a strong safety profile. Several other therapeutic strategies are currently in advanced stages of development.
