Ferrari Luce electric supercar sells for record $40 million

The first production example of the Ferrari Luce, the brand's inaugural all-electric model, sold for a record-breaking $40 million at an RM Sotheby's charity auction during Monterey Car Week in California. The vehicle, identified as “Chassis 0,” is a highly customized “Tailor Made” model featuring a unique iridescent “Madreperla Semi-Gloss” finish that shifts between green and violet depending on light angles.

The buyer was identified as American billionaire and philanthropist Herbert Wertheim. Wertheim, who previously purchased a Ferrari Daytona SP3 for $26 million, intends to use the vehicle for future fundraising efforts. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Ferrari Foundation to support its educational programs.

Designed in collaboration with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom studio, the Luce has faced mixed reactions from enthusiasts and critics regarding its departure from traditional Ferrari design. Despite the controversy, the sale sets a new record for the most expensive new car sold at auction, significantly exceeding its initial estimated value of approximately $1.1 million.
