Heritage Open Days festival offers free access to UK historic sites

The Heritage Open Days festival will feature various historic sites across the United Kingdom this September. In Chester, the Chester Civic Trust is opening its headquarters, Bishop Lloyd’s Palace, to the public on September 12. The Grade I listed building, which dates back to the 17th century with older foundations, will showcase its Jacobean plasterwork and reception chambers. Volunteers will be available to provide information and refreshments for a small donation.

In Cornwall, the festival runs from September 11 to 20, offering free access to approximately 54 attractions. The program includes medieval churches, stately homes, and industrial landmarks. Specific highlights include tours of Antony House, military sites at Maker Heights focusing on World War II history, and ancient villages such as Chysauster and Carn Euny. The event allows visitors to explore mines, manor houses, and gardens that typically require admission fees.
