UK Heritage Open Days festival
Overview
The Heritage Open Days festival, a nationwide celebration of history and culture in the United Kingdom, is scheduled to run from September 11 to 20.
In Chester, the festival includes public access to Bishop Lloyd’s Palace, a Grade I listed 17th-century building. In Cornwall, approximately 54 attractions will offer free access, ranging from medieval churches and stately homes to industrial landmarks and World War II military sites.
Warrington is participating in the program, featuring tours of the Grade II listed Parr Hall and Walton Hall. Other local activities include demonstrations at the Museum of Policing in Cheshire, heritage walks, and commemorations of St Oswald’s Church in Winwick. The festival in Warrington also marks the 150th anniversary of the Warrington Wolves Rugby League. Additional local events include bell-ringing demonstrations at St Matthew’s Church in Stretton.
In Hampshire, English Heritage is participating under the theme ‘Everyday Histories’, which focuses on local community stories. Scheduled activities include a multi-period re-enactment weekend at Fort Brockhurst on September 12 and 13, featuring period camps and weapon displays. Other Hampshire events include walking tours of 18 sites within the medieval walls of Southampton and a tour of the Silchester Roman Fort.
On the Isle of Wight, the Heritage Service is providing free entry to the Museum of Island History and the Newport Roman Villa. The museum will host an immersive theatre walk centered on the poet Charlotte Mew on September 12, while the Newport Roman Villa will be open to the public on September 19.
