Hermosillo sinkhole collapse injures cyclist, triggers 60‑day repair of aging drainage system

Heavy rains caused a 36‑inch drainage collector to collapse in the El Sahuaro colonia of Hermosillo, Sonora, creating a large sinkhole at the intersection of Juan de Dios Bojórquez and Ignacio Salazar. The failure released foul‑smelling sewage water and threatened nearby streets.

A 50‑year‑old cyclist, Roberto Carlos, fell into the sinkhole early Saturday morning. He was rescued unharmed by state police officers and Red Cross paramedics and did not require hospitalization. Municipal and state officials, including Miguel Ángel Santana, manager of Sanitation and Drainage for Agua de Hermosillo, said the pipe, over 40 years old, was overloaded by the recent rains. Repair work with heavy machinery has begun, with an estimated duration of at least 60 days, and officials warned that similar failures could occur elsewhere in the city if the aging network is not upgraded.
