Hermosillo sinkhole infrastructure failures

In mid‑July 2026 a large sinkhole opened on Carlos Quintero Arce boulevard in Hermosillo after a 72‑inch sanitary pipe, more than 50 years old, ruptured. A double‑cab pickup fell into the hole while its driver tried to assist an already‑injured motorcyclist. The driver escaped unharmed; the motorcyclist received medical care. Municipal officials blocked the road, began safety assessments and pledged prompt repairs.

Less than three weeks later, heavy rains caused a 36‑inch drainage collector to collapse in the El Sahuaro colonia, creating another sinkhole at a busy intersection. A 50‑year‑old cyclist fell in but was rescued unharmed by police and Red Cross personnel. Officials confirmed the pipe, over 40 years old, was overloaded by the rains and launched a 60‑day repair operation with heavy machinery, warning that similar failures could occur elsewhere if the aging network is not upgraded.
