Hernán Lacunza Announces Intent to Run for Argentine Presidency in 2027

Former Economy Minister Hernán Lacunza confirmed his intention to contest the 2027 Argentine presidential election, citing a personal vocation for public service. In an interview he criticised the current macroeconomic policies of President Javier Milei and highlighted the recessionary impact on industry, commerce and construction.

Lacunza said his decision was discussed with former President Mauricio Macri, who encouraged him despite the personal costs of a campaign. The announcement has reignited an internal debate within the Republican Proposal (PRO) party over whether to field an independent centre‑right candidate or negotiate an electoral alliance with Milei’s La Libertad Avanza. Party leaders fear a split could fragment the centre‑right electorate, while others argue a distinct PRO platform is needed to compete with both the libertarian government and the Peronist opposition.
