Argentina 2027 election alliance talks

In late July, Buenos Aires mayor Jorge Macri indicated he would not rule out an electoral pact with the libertarian coalition La Libertad Avanza for the 2027 city elections, framing any agreement as a means to prevent a return of Kirchnerism.

In August 2026, former Economy Minister Hernán Lacunza formally announced his intention to run for the presidency as the Republican Proposal (PRO) candidate. Lacunza stated he has the support of party founder Mauricio Macri, noting, “I spoke with Macri and he encouraged me to do it.” While acknowledging the current administration’s success in stabilizing the macroeconomy and reducing inflation, Lacunza criticized the government’s economic direction. He specifically warned that the drastic reduction in public works is unsustainable, stating, “a country without public works can last three years, but not six, because we are going to start falling into potholes.” He further argued that the current model fails to generate sufficient employment in the industrial and commercial sectors compared to the energy and agricultural sectors.

Lacunza’s candidacy has intensified internal PRO debates over whether to field an independent center-right candidate or negotiate an alliance with Javier Milei’s La Libertad Avanza to avoid fragmenting the electorate.

Concurrently, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta confirmed his intention to run for Mayor of the City of Buenos Aires in 2027. While anticipating potential cooperation between the PRO and La Libertad Avanza, Rodríguez Larreta emphasized his desire to build a distinct alternative rather than an opposition front based solely on being ‘anti’ a specific figure. He dismissed rumors of an alliance with the Peronist movement, describing such a move as ‘a disaster.’
