Israel strikes Beirut suburb amid US‑Iran peace deal talks

Israel’s military struck the Dahiyeh neighbourhood in southern Beirut, targeting Hezbollah infrastructure. The attack killed at least three people and injured several others, including six civilians, according to Lebanese civil defence reports. Israel said the strike was retaliation for projectiles launched from Lebanon toward its northern border.

The raid occurred as the United States and Iran were poised to sign a memorandum of understanding that would end the broader regional war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump condemned the Israeli operation, posting on Truth Social that “the attack ... should not have happened, especially on a day when we are so close to a peace deal with Iran.” He reiterated that the United States was “very close to a deal that will bring peace to the region, including Lebanon.”

Iranian negotiators responded sharply. Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf warned on X that “if you lack the will or the ability to fulfill your commitments, talking about continuing the path is impossible,” and the Iranian armed forces’ deputy commander of the Khatam‑al‑Anbiya force said the strike “will not go unanswered.” Iran’s foreign ministry also said the attacks threatened the viability of any US‑Iran agreement. The United Nations Secretary‑General condemned the bombing as occurring at a “crucial moment” when the US and Iran were expected to reach an agreement.

Israel simultaneously ordered the forced evacuation of more than twenty villages in southern Lebanon, reporting additional casualties among Hezbollah fighters. The escalation heightened tensions over the pending US‑Iran deal and raised concerns about a broader regional fallout.
