Israel-Hezbollah war: death toll climbs, civilian harm

Overview

Since the June 21 cease‑fire, Israel has kept a 10‑km security zone along the Lebanon border and continued air and drone strikes on Hezbollah positions. Lebanese health data record over 4,300 deaths and more than 12,200 injuries, including 250 children. Amnesty International has called earlier airstrikes war crimes and urged an independent inquiry. On July 17, Israeli forces intensified the campaign, striking Mansuri and Majdal Zun, firing heavy machine‑guns on Basra and demolishing a site near Khiam. An explosion tied to tunnel‑clearing work occurred in Nabatieh, and soldiers forced farmers off fields between Ain Arab and Mari, expanding the de‑facto security zone. Seventy‑three UNESCO‑protected archaeological sites are now at risk, prompting Lebanese authorities to move artefacts to safe storage. By July 18 the death toll rose to at least 4,328 and displacement exceeded one million. Twenty schools have been destroyed, 17 completely demolished, threatening education for up to 500,000 children, with UNICEF warning that 100,000 pupils could miss the upcoming school year. The U.S.‑mediated temporary cease‑fire has been repeatedly extended, most recently to a 45‑day period beginning 17 May, while Iran and Pakistan facilitated a 14‑point agreement. On July 19 Hezbollah held a mass funeral for about 40 fighters in Majdal Selm, coinciding with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun’s trip to the United States to reinforce the cease‑fire. Israeli strikes and a military presence persist in southern Lebanon despite the truce. On 18 July the Lebanese Health Ministry confirmed the death toll had risen to at least 4,328 with more than 12,200 injured and over one million displaced. The destruction of at least 20 schools – 17 completely demolished – continues to endanger education for up to half a million children.
