Israel-Hezbollah conflict in Lebanon (August 2026)
Overview
The war that erupted in March 2026 after Hezbollah’s rocket barrage and the killing of Iran’s supreme leader has entered a new phase. A U.S.–brokered cease‑fire took effect on 21 June, and a framework agreement signed on 26 June calls for a phased Israeli withdrawal, Hezbollah disarmament and the hand‑over of pilot zones to the Lebanese army. Despite the truce, Israel has continued strikes on Hezbollah infrastructure, drone depots and tunnels, injuring civilians and demolishing villages in the 10‑km security zone. Israeli war‑minister Yisrael Katz claimed the army razed 24 border villages, destroying up to 20,000 homes, while Amnesty International has documented multiple airstrikes that killed 24 civilians, half of them children, and called for war‑crimes investigations. Casualty figures have risen: the Lebanese health ministry reports 4,330 deaths and more than 12,200 injuries, with over one million people displaced. By mid-August, instability intensified. On August 15, airstrikes in the Nabatieh district, specifically in Ansar and Deir al-Zahrani, killed at least 11 people, including three children and two women, bringing the total Lebanese death toll to 4,346. While Israel stated the strikes targeted ‘Hezbollah terror infrastructure,’ Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam asserted the victims were not military targets. UNIFIL reported a surge in activity, noting an average of 137 projectiles fired daily between August 5 and 16. Simultaneously, widespread wildfires are ravaging southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley. Local officials and the NGO Green Southerners accuse the Israeli military of systematically igniting these blazes using drones, flares, and white phosphorus to destroy olive groves, agricultural lands, and archaeological sites. Residents and municipal representatives claim these actions aim to make territories ‘unfit for life.’
