Hezbollah’s fiber‑optic UAVs challenge Israeli defenses as Israel strikes Lebanon, Iran warns US‑Iran deal at risk

Hezbollah has begun employing small, cable‑controlled UAVs that use fiber‑optic links for guidance, a technology that makes the drones resistant to Israel’s electronic‑warfare systems. The drones have been used in attacks on Israeli armored vehicles and other targets along the Lebanon‑Israel border, prompting Israeli defence officials to acknowledge a new, hard‑to‑counter threat.

On 18 June, Israel carried out a UAV strike on a vehicle near Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, killing one person and wounding another. The attack illustrates the continued hostilities despite a recently brokered cease‑fire agreement between the United States and Iran. On the same day, Iran warned that Israel’s ongoing military presence in southern Lebanon could jeopardise the implementation of the US‑Iran memorandum, urging a full halt to Israeli operations in the area.

The developments highlight a widening regional security challenge, combining novel weaponry on the ground with diplomatic friction involving Lebanon, Israel, Iran and the United States.
