Hüfifirn glacier reveals 1963 plane wreckage in Switzerland
An aircraft wreckage from a 1963 crash has resurfaced on the Hüfifirn glacier in the Swiss canton of Uri. The discovery was made by a hiker during a trek.
The Swiss Safety Investigation Service (SESE) verified that the debris most likely belongs to the aircraft that crashed over sixty years ago. Authorities noted that the wreckage had remained hidden due to the glacier, but melting caused by climate change has made it visible again.
The original 1963 accident resulted in no fatalities, as the pilot and a passenger were able to exit the aircraft unharmed. On September 3, officials recovered approximately 250 kilograms of debris, which is scheduled to be processed at a recycling center.
