Alpine glacier retreat revealing lost items and wreckage

Overview

Glacial retreat in the Alps is increasingly revealing items and remains lost to mountaineering accidents decades ago.

In the Swiss Alps, the remains of two Belgian climbers, Marcel Bastyns and Jos Van Deun, were recovered from the Trift Glacier. The men had disappeared in September 1992 while attempting to climb the Weissmies peak during a period of poor weather. Their identities were confirmed via DNA profiling following their discovery by a hiker near Saas-Grund.

Similarly, in the Tyrolean Alps, a hiker discovered a backpack on the Sulztalferner glacier containing an ice axe, a camera, and documents dating from the 1950s or 1960s. The equipment belonged to an 86-year-old man who had lost it in August 1963 after falling into a crevasse. Tyrolean police identified the owner through the found documents and returned the belongings to him.

Further evidence of melting-induced discoveries occurred on the Hüfifirn Glacier in the Swiss canton of Uri, where a hiker found light metal debris. A recovery operation involving the Uri Cantonal Police, mountain units of the Swiss Air Force, and private companies retrieved approximately 250 kilograms of material. While the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (SUST) had previously been unable to definitively identify the aircraft due to missing major components, the Swiss Safety Investigation Service (SESE) has since verified that the debris most likely belongs to the aircraft that crashed over sixty years ago.

The original 1963 accident resulted in no fatalities, as the pilot and a passenger were able to exit the aircraft unharmed. The recovered wreckage is scheduled to be processed at a recycling center. Officials attribute the emergence of such wreckage to receding glaciers caused by rising temperatures and climate change.
