Honduras invests $72 million in rural agricultural development

Honduras is investing approximately $72 million to strengthen agricultural productivity and water security for 30,000 rural households across 88 municipalities. Executed by the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) through the SAG-ProOccidente project, the initiative focuses on the western region, including Copán, Ocotepeque, Lempira, Santa Bárbara, Intibucá, and La Paz.

Supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the program emphasizes the sustainable management of over 25 priority micro-basins. Key technological implementations include drip fertigation systems, water harvesting, and community reservoirs to mitigate drought vulnerability. A specific phase of the productive development component involves an investment of $14.23 million, part of a larger $17.79 million programmatic portfolio funded by the IDB and AECID via the Spanish Fund for Sustainable Development (FEDES).
