Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa increases power output and reservoir levels
Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) reported a significant increase in both power generation and reservoir storage levels during the first half of 2026, following a two-year period of severe drought.
The company generated 6,399.03 gigawatt-hours (GWh), representing a 13% increase compared to the same period the previous year and exceeding its semi-annual target by approximately 10%. Notably, this production growth occurred alongside a recovery in the dam’s useful storage, which rose from a historic low of roughly 20% in January to 56% by the end of June.
This recovery is attributed to improved hydrological conditions within the Zambezi basin, where water inflows exceeded the volume consumed for power generation. The company stated that this performance reflects a balanced approach to managing and conserving water resources, enhancing energy security for Mozambique and the Southern African region.
