Hidroelectrica signs €188 million contract to upgrade Romania's Râul Mare Retezat hydro plant

Hidroelectrica announced the signing of a contract valued at €188.4 million to modernise the Râul Mare Retezat hydroelectric plant in Romania. The work will be carried out by a consortium led by Cobra Instalaciones y Servicios and Andritz Hydro GmbH, supported by several subcontractors.

The upgrade will replace the existing turbines with new vertical Francis turbines, refurbish generators, revamp excitation and automation systems, and integrate the plant into modern SCADA controls. These measures aim to recover about 135 MW of previously unavailable capacity, raising the plant’s effective output from roughly 200 MW to its full 335 MW design, improve efficiency and reliability, and reinforce Romania’s energy security.

The contract follows a public procurement process launched in September 2025, with final award confirmed in April 2026.
