High salt consumption linked to obesity and stroke risks

Research indicates a strong link between high salt consumption and increased risks of obesity and stroke. Studies published in journals such as Nutrition Research and Practice and Hypertension show that individuals with high sodium intake have an average weight approximately 8 kg higher and waistlines about 5 cm larger than those with low intake. For every additional gram of salt consumed daily, the risk of obesity increases by 28% in children and 26% in adults.

Beyond weight gain, excessive salt is a major contributor to cardiovascular issues. According to data from the Global Burden of Disease study published in The Lancet Neurology, new stroke cases rose significantly between 1990 and 2019. Medical experts, including Dr. Wang Xifu from Beijing's Anzhen Hospital, warn that long-term high salt intake damages blood vessel linings and promotes atherosclerosis, significantly elevating stroke risk. Adults consuming more than 6g of salt daily face a nearly 30% higher risk of stroke compared to normal levels.
