High salt content in pretzels and emergency supplies warns health experts

Health and consumer protection sources are warning about high sodium levels in everyday foods, specifically noting that a single pretzel can contain more than 1 gram of salt. This contributes significantly to daily intake, making it difficult to stay within the recommended limit.

The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends that adults consume no more than 6 grams of salt per day. However, much of this intake comes from processed foods and baked goods rather than added table salt. Experts note that traditional pretzels made from white flour are often low in fiber and micronutrients while being high in sodium.

Risks associated with excessive salt consumption include increased blood pressure and a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases. This is particularly concerning for individuals with pre-existing hypertension or kidney issues. Additionally, many processed emergency food supplies and canned goods are high in salt, requiring consumers to check nutritional labels carefully during purchase.
