Higher education faces scrutiny over ideological bias and academic rigor

Discussions regarding the decline of intellectual rigor and the rise of ideological bias in American higher education continue to surface. Historical precedents, such as the 1996 “Sokal Hoax,” are cited to illustrate how academic journals have occasionally published nonsensical content that aligns with specific ideological preconceptions.

In the field of social work, critics point to the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) for maintaining anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) mandates within its accreditation standards. Despite requests to remove these directives, the CSWE has expressed its continued commitment to these principles. Furthermore, academic research from the University of Wyoming and Colorado State University has focused on using ADEI principles to dismantle white supremacy within social work programs, a direction that critics argue prioritizes social justice activism over disinterested scholarly inquiry.
