Vietnam Traffic Police enforce safe following distances on expressways

The Traffic Police Department has begun strictly enforcing safe following distance regulations on several major expressways in Vietnam, including the Phap Van - Cau Giẽ - Cao Bồ - Mai Sơn - QL45 - Nghi Sơn route and the TP. HCM - Van Phong expressway. Enforcement utilizes smart camera systems, road markings, and technical equipment to identify violations.

Drivers failing to maintain required distances on the same lane and direction face fines ranging from 4 to 6 million VND and a 2-point deduction from their driver's license. If the violation results in a traffic accident, penalties increase to 20–22 million VND and a 10-point deduction. Required distances vary by speed: for example, at speeds between 60 km/h and 80 km/h, a minimum distance of 55 meters is required under dry conditions.

Authorities clarified that drivers will not be penalized for sudden distance reductions caused by emergency braking, traffic congestion, or other vehicles abruptly changing lanes into the gap. The Traffic Police Department emphasized that the primary goal is not maximizing fines, but rather preventing accidents and fostering safer driving habits through increased awareness.
