HII awarded U.S. Navy contract for ROMULUS unmanned surface vessels

HII has been awarded a U.S. Navy contract to build ROMULUS unmanned surface vessels (USVs) as part of the Medium Unmanned Surface Vessel (MUSV) program. The project aims to transition the Navy from experimentation to fleet-scale deployment of operational autonomy.

Incat Crowther is participating as a member of the ROMULUS project team, providing naval architecture and design services through its team based in Louisiana. The ROMULUS vessels are described as a modular family of AI-enabled USVs utilizing HII’s Odyssey Advanced Autonomy Solutions.

HII intends to utilize a distributed production model involving various regional shipbuilders and manufacturing partners to scale production capacity in response to Navy demand. The program is moving from autonomy trials and evaluation toward vessel construction and fleet deployment.
