Hiker dies in 20-meter fall near Brèche de Roland

A 75-year-old hiker died following a 20-meter fall near the Brèche de Roland in the Gavarnie massif on August 30. The accident occurred around 2:00 PM on the section connecting the Sarradets refuge to a nearby pass in the Hautes-Pyrénées.

Emergency responders arrived by helicopter to find the victim in cardiac arrest. Despite resuscitation attempts, the man could not be saved. The area had previously been flagged by authorities; on August 2, a rockfall on the south walls of Pic de Bazillac led the CRS to warn climbers to avoid certain passages due to falling stones.

The Brèche de Roland, a 40-meter wide natural opening at 2,804 meters, serves as the border between Spain and France. The terrain is noted for being steep and demanding, with other recent incidents in the area involving hikers navigating off-trail routes.
