Hiking safety concerns rise with heavy reliance on digital navigation
The increasing reliance on digital tools for outdoor activities has raised safety concerns among hiking professionals. A recent incident on Scotland’s Isle of Skye highlighted these risks when the Skye Mountain Rescue Team assisted 20 hikers in various incidents along the Skye Trail in a single day.
Rescue officials noted that hikers often underestimate challenging terrain by relying too heavily on electronic navigation. While GPS and hiking apps are valuable, they have significant limitations, including battery failure, loss of cellular service, and the inability to account for physical changes like washed-out trails or overgrown paths. Experts emphasize that traditional navigation skills, such as using a map and compass, remain essential for safety.
