Hillsborough County students return to school amid rising costs

Students in Hillsborough County, Florida, have returned to classrooms for the new academic year, facing both educational shifts and rising preparation costs. Families are navigating increased expenses for school supplies, clothing, and electronics. National estimates from PricewaterhouseCoopers suggest spending per family could approach $1,000, while the National Retail Federation expects total nationwide back-to-school spending to exceed $43 billion.

To mitigate costs, Florida is currently observing a back-to-school sales tax holiday for qualifying items through August 20. Local Superintendent Van Ayres noted that community initiatives, such as a recent event by the Bullard Family Foundation that provided 30,000 backpacks, are vital in supporting families.

Academically, the Hillsborough County School District enters the year following a period of improved ratings, with 74 schools earning an “A” grade. Key district initiatives for this year include the expansion of full-day Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) and a reduction in screen time for students in kindergarten through second grade in favor of hands-on learning. The district also reports improved staffing levels regarding teachers and bus drivers compared to previous years.
