India monsoon surge brings floods and heavy‑rain alerts nationwide

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued yellow and orange alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall across a majority of Indian states as the southwest monsoon intensified. Gujarat and Assam faced the worst flooding; Gujarat rescued more than 40,500 people and recorded five deaths, while Assam’s flood zones affected over 6.5  lakh people, with 66 fatalities reported. Other severely impacted states include Haryana, Delhi‑NCR, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where landslides, water‑logging and road disruptions are expected. The department warned of strong winds up to 70 km/h, lightning, and possible damage to agriculture and infrastructure. Authorities have advised residents to avoid travel in vulnerable zones, stay alert for landslides, and follow shelter‑in‑place guidance.
