Himachal Pradesh rains spark alerts, landslides and tourist surge in Shimla

The India Meteorological Department issued yellow and orange alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall across Himachal Pradesh from July 10 to July 15. Forecasts call for intense monsoon spells, gusty winds and flash‑flood risks, especially in Shimla, Sirmaur, Mandi, Kangra, Kullu and Solan districts. The rain has already closed dozens of roads, knocked out dozens of electricity transformers and disrupted water supplies. Landslides have damaged vehicles, collapsed retaining walls and submerged houses in Shimla and Kinnaur, prompting authorities to advise residents and visitors to avoid rivers, streams and landslide‑prone areas.

Despite the disruptions, tourist numbers remain strong. Visitors from Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and other states report feeling safe and enjoying the mist‑covered hills and cooler weather after the showers. Local officials have urged caution, kept schools closed in some areas and kept emergency teams on standby as the monsoon continues.

The state administration has ordered high alert for emergency response teams, machinery and relief materials throughout the monsoon season, and continues to monitor the situation closely.
