Himalayan flood kills 586 and leaves 2,500 missing in Nepal and China FAST-MOVING
A massive flood and landslide disaster in the Himalayan border regions of Nepal and China has resulted in at least 586 deaths, with more than 2,500 people still missing. In Nepal, the death toll has reached 579, while China has reported seven fatalities in the Tibet Autonomous Region.
Experts suggest the catastrophe was triggered by a significant glacier collapse at an altitude of approximately 5,200 meters on Langtang Lirung, which released massive amounts of water and debris. The resulting torrents destroyed critical infrastructure, including the Gyirong border crossing, a vital trade and tourism route between the two nations.
Rescue operations are ongoing but face severe challenges due to thick mud, debris, and destroyed roads. While many countries have offered assistance, Nepal has stated it currently possesses the capacity to manage search and rescue efforts internally. There are ongoing concerns regarding a newly formed lake above Gyirong, though officials note that natural drainage has reduced the immediate risk of a secondary flood.
