Himalayan flash flood causes mass casualties in Nepal and China

A massive flash flood triggered by a glacier collapse in the Himalayan region has caused widespread devastation. On August 26, a section of a glacier wall broke off the north flank of Langtang Lirung, sending torrents of water down the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi rivers. The disaster has resulted in at least 475 confirmed deaths, over 1,400 injuries, and more than 2,400 people missing.

In response to the catastrophe, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz sent messages of condolence to Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah and Chinese President Xi Jinping, expressing deep sympathy for the victims and their families.

While several nations, including India, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Japan, and South Korea, have offered search and rescue teams, the Nepalese government has declined foreign personnel. Citing coordination difficulties experienced during the 2015 earthquake, Kathmandu authorities stated that the national army and police will lead search efforts independently. Instead, the government is requesting financial assistance, with the United States, the United Kingdom, the World Bank, and South Korea pledging monetary aid.

Further risks have emerged as a lake formed by a landslide on the Nepal-China border has begun to overflow, threatening areas already devastated by the initial flood and forcing a temporary pause in rescue operations.
