Catastrophic flash flooding and landslides triggered by a glacial collapse have devastated the Himalayan border region between Nepal and China. The disaster, which occurred on August 26, has resulted in a death toll reported by various authorities to be between 538 and 580 people. More than 1,500 individuals remain missing, including hundreds of foreigners from over 30 different countries.

The impact has been particularly severe in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, where mud, ice, and debris have destroyed homes, bridges, and roads. In one instance, over 100 people were reported trapped in a hydropower plant tunnel. Rescue efforts are being hampered by thick mud and the threat of secondary flooding caused by a newly formed natural dam. This lake, located approximately ten kilometers from the Gyirong checkpoint, holds millions of cubic meters of water and poses a continuous risk to downstream communities.

In China’s Tibet region, authorities have reported at least five deaths and hundreds of missing persons. International organizations, including the Red Cross and the World Health Organization, have warned of the ongoing humanitarian crisis, citing risks of infectious diseases due to displacement and disrupted sanitation services. Rescue teams are utilizing mountain bikes and specialized equipment to reach isolated mountain villages where traditional vehicles can no longer pass.
