Himalayan flash flood kills over 500, leaves 1,400 missing

A devastating flash flood in the Himalayan region between Nepal and China has resulted in at least 538 deaths in Nepal and five deaths in Tibet. The disaster, triggered by a glacier collapse and subsequent ice and rockfall on August 26, has left more than 1,400 people missing, including hundreds of foreign tourists.

Amid the catastrophe, a four-member German family was rescued by the Nepalese army via helicopter and transported to an army camp in Battar Bazar. The father, Manuel Münch, stated that a change in their trekking schedule likely saved their lives. While this family was secured, the German Foreign Office reports that a low double-digit number of German citizens remain missing, including members of an international pilgrimage group returning from Mount Kailash.

Rescue efforts are being severely hampered by destruction to roads and bridges, making many affected districts, such as Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading, accessible only by air. In China, Premier Li Qiang has been dispatched to the crisis area as authorities monitor the situation, including the potential risk of dam failures due to ongoing heavy rainfall.
