Nepal and China face massive casualties after Himalayan glacier collapse
A massive natural disaster triggered by a glacier collapse in the Himalayas has caused catastrophic flooding and landslides along the border of Nepal and China. The disaster, which began on August 26, has resulted in a death toll exceeding 950 people, with more than 4,400 individuals reported missing across both nations.
In Nepal, the impact is severe, particularly in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. Authorities report that hundreds of workers, potentially as many as 933, remain trapped in tunnels of various hydropower projects, including the Upper Trishuli complex. Rescue operations are being conducted by the Nepali military with technical assistance from teams from India and China.
In China's Tibet Autonomous Region, officials have confirmed 16 deaths and 546 missing persons. The disaster has also created a significant risk of secondary flooding due to the formation of a large barrier lake containing approximately 1.5 to 2 million cubic meters of water, which is currently overflowing.
Humanitarian efforts are underway, though hampered by difficult terrain and ongoing rainfall. The Nepal government has begun collecting DNA samples from unidentified bodies to assist in identification before mass burials. International aid and specialized rescue teams continue to navigate the debris to locate survivors and recover victims.
