Nepal and China border floods leave over 550 dead FAST-MOVING

A catastrophic natural disaster triggered by a glacier collapse has caused massive flooding and landslides along the border of Nepal and China's Tibet region. The disaster, which began on August 26, has resulted in a death toll exceeding 550 people, with official counts from Nepal and China varying slightly as search operations continue.

More than 1,500 people remain missing, including hundreds of foreign tourists, pilgrims, and workers. Many of the missing are nationals from India, the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries. The Bhote Koshi river valley has been particularly devastated, with entire villages swept away by a surge of mud, ice, and debris.

Rescue efforts are being hampered by destroyed infrastructure, including bridges and roads, and the loss of electricity and communication lines. There is an ongoing threat of secondary flooding due to an artificial lake formed by debris blocking a river in Tibet, which authorities warn could burst.

Humanitarian organizations, including UNICEF, have highlighted the urgent need for assistance, noting that over 17,000 children are in need of aid. The European Union has pledged 2 million euros in emergency assistance to support affected communities.
