Himalayan region faces heavy monsoon rains and landslide risks

Active monsoon conditions are posing significant risks to travelers and pilgrims in the Himalayan region. The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rains, thunderstorms, and gusty winds between August 28 and September 3, affecting areas ranging from Odisha to Uttarakhand.

In Himachal Pradesh, the Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued a Yellow Alert for heavy rainfall. Increased precipitation is expected to begin around August 31, with heavy rain likely in districts such as Kangra, Sirmaur, Bilaspur, Chamba, Mandi, and Shimla through early September. These conditions heighten the risk of landslides, flooding, and road instability.

The danger is underscored by a recent flash flood in the Nepal-Tibet Himalayan corridor, which resulted in hundreds of deaths. This incident occurred along a route frequently used by trekkers and pilgrims traveling to Kailash Mansarovar, highlighting the vulnerability of mountain corridors to glacier-related phenomena and sudden rises in river levels.
