Himachal monsoon hazards persist, death toll climbs

Overview

Heavy monsoon rains continued to batter Himachal Pradesh’s mountain roads and infrastructure through July 2026. Early incidents in late June and early July—including vehicle accidents, landslides that blocked about 60 roads, and a flash‑flood that washed away the bridge linking Chitkul and Dumti—prompted orange and yellow rain alerts, school closures, and large‑scale debris‑clearing operations. The Border Roads Organisation began assessing damage to the severed border‑access route.

From July 28 to July 31 the India Meteorological Department issued an Orange Alert for heavy to very heavy rain across the state. Between June 30 and July 26 the monsoon claimed 15 lives, 14 in landslides (13 in Lahaul and Spiti, one in Chamba) and one in a flash‑flood in Kangra. As of 26 July, 135 roads remained blocked, with Kullu, Shimla and Mandi districts hardest hit. Power restoration reduced disrupted transformers to 44, but water‑supply issues grew, leaving 38 schemes out of service, including 19 in Hamirpur. Disaster‑management teams continue clearing debris, monitoring rainfall, and advising residents and tourists to avoid travel and stay alert to weather updates.
